Legal requirements to get married:
- Ceremony (Civil/Religious)
Civil and religious ceremonies are legally recognized weddings preformed in Trinidad and Tobago. There are 4 types of ceremonies: Civil, Hindu, Muslim, and Orisa. Any ceremony must be performed by an authorized officiant.
- Age and Relation
The bride and groom must be at least 18 years of age. Muslim and Hindu faiths can provide exemptions to this requirement. If the parties are Muslim, they must be at least 12 years of age. If the parties are Hindu, they must be at least 16 years of age. Documentation of your faith may be required. Note that the legal age in your home country must be met to be recognized. For example, the United States requires that both parties be 18 years of age for your marriage to be recognized upon your return to the United States. The couple cannot be related by blood, marriage or adoption.
Two witnesses over 18 years of age must be present for the ceremony and provide their passports.
Know the venue of your wedding ceremony and take all paperwork (in person) to the General Registrar’s Office in or to give Notice of Marriage (valid for one year). The couple should visit the Registrar’s Office only after a 3 day stay on the island. Here, an application for a Special Marriage License can be submitted. Plan the wedding date at least 7 days preceding the issue of the Marriage License.
