Belize-Marriage Requirements


Legal Requirements for Getting Married in Belize

Allotted time:

Allow least 4-10 days from arrival in Belize to wedding date to process paperwork (a 3 day stay is required as well as 7 days to process the application for a marriage license–expedited applications are available). We recommend giving yourself more time due to preparation, weekends, holidays or unexpected delays.
Necessary legal documents:
Please note that all documents must be submitted in Spanish or English. Contact the Embassy in your home country or your Embassy in Belize for an authorized translator. If your documents are translated, be prepared to submit the original copies in your native language for verification as well as the translated version.
  • Certified copy of birth certificates (must include father’s name)
  • Valid Passports and photocopies of photo page and page with dated entry stamp
  • Application for a Marriage License (available online or in Belize)
  • Divorce decree or death certificates, if applicable

Legal requirements to get married:

  • Ceremony (Civil/Religious)

Civil and religious ceremonies are legally recognized weddings preformed in Belize.

  • Age and Relation

The bride and groom must be at least 18 years of age. They cannot be related by blood, marriage or adoption.

  • Witnesses

Two witnesses must be present for the ceremony and provide their passports.

  • Registry

The couple must stay in Belize for 3 days prior to submitting paperwork.

An Application for a Marriage License can be obtained online or from the in Belize City.

Once submitted it can take a week to process the marriage license application. This can be expedited (within 24 hours) for an increased cost.

Keep in mind that couples planning a wedding ceremony at an Archaeological Reserve, must request permission a week in advance of a planned wedding date. This request can be .

  • The marriage must be registered with the Belize Registry Department, preceding the wedding ceremony.
